The question, in short
Expand and simplify a product of two binomials, then solve a linear equation with a fraction, showing algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Expand and simplify (m + 5)(m − 8).
- 1(m + 5)(m − 8) = m² − 8m + 5m − 40
- 2m² − 3m − 40
Answerm² − 3m − 40
Part (b) · 3 marks
Solve 3n − 4 = (5n + 6)/3, showing clear algebraic working.
- 13n − 4 = (5n + 6)/3
- 23(3n − 4) = 5n + 6
- 39n − 12 = 5n + 6
- 49n − 5n = 6 + 12
- 54n = 18
- 6n = 18/4
- 7n = 9/2
Answer9/2
