Part (a) · 2 marks
Show that dividing 3/10 by 1/4 gives 6/5.
- 1Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal, so turn 1/4 upside down and multiply.
- 23/10 ÷ 1/4 = 3/10 × 4/1
- 33/10 × 4/1 = (3 × 4)/(10 × 1) = 12/10
- 4Divide the numerator and the denominator by 2: 12/10 = 6/5
- 5So 3/10 ÷ 1/4 = 6/5
Answer3/10 ÷ 1/4 = 3/10 × 4/1 = 12/10 = 6/5
Part (b) · 2 marks
Show that subtracting 3/4 from 5/6 gives 1/12.
- 1The lowest common denominator of 6 and 4 is 12.
- 25/6 = 10/12 and 3/4 = 9/12
- 310/12 − 9/12 = 1/12
- 4So 5/6 − 3/4 = 1/12
Answer5/6 − 3/4 = 10/12 − 9/12 = 1/12
