The question, in short

Two rectangles have side lengths in cm: A is (5 − x) by 4, B is (2x − 1) by 5. Given B's area is twice A's, find x showing working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Area A = 4(5 − x) = 20 − 4x; area B = 5(2x − 1) = 10x − 5
  2. 2B is twice A: 10x − 5 = 2(20 − 4x) = 40 − 8x
  3. 318x = 45
  4. 4x = 2.5
