WMA11/01 Jun 2025, Question 1: Fractional Indices
Pearson Edexcel International AS Level Mathematics · Pure Mathematics 1 (WMA11) · Calculator · 5 marks
The question, in short
Given p = (1/16)x⁴ and q = 40/x³, rewrite three expressions in the form kxⁿ with k and n fully simplified constants.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Express p^(1/2) in the form kxⁿ, simplifying k and n.
- 1p^(1/2) = (1/16)^(1/2) × (x⁴)^(1/2)
- 2= (1/4)x²
Answer(1/4)x²
Part (b) · 2 marks
Express (pq)⁻¹ in the form kxⁿ, simplifying k and n.
- 1pq = (1/16)x⁴ × 40/x³ = (40/16)x = (5/2)x
- 2(pq)⁻¹ = ((5/2)x)⁻¹ = (2/5)x⁻¹
Answer(2/5)x⁻¹
Part (c) · 2 marks
Express pq² in the form kxⁿ, simplifying k and n.
- 1q² = 1600/x⁶
- 2pq² = (1/16)x⁴ × 1600x⁻⁶
- 3= 100x⁻²
Answer100x⁻²
