WMA12/01 Jan 2025, Question 6: Chords and Tangent Geometry

Pearson Edexcel International AS Level Mathematics · Pure Mathematics 2 (WMA12) · Calculator · 8 marks

The question, in short

A question on chords and tangent geometry.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 4 marks

  1. 1M = ((−1 + 11)/2, (2 + 6)/2) = (5, 4)
  2. 2Gradient of AB = (6 − 2)/(11 − (−1)) = 4/12 = 1/3
  3. 3l is perpendicular to AB, so its gradient is −3
  4. 4y − 4 = −3(x − 5), so y = −3x + 19

Answery = −3x + 19

Part (b) · 1 mark

  1. 1P lies on l: k = −3(7) + 19
  2. 2k = −2

Answerk = −2

Part (c) · 3 marks

  1. 1r² = (11 − 7)² + (6 − (−2))²
  2. 2r² = 16 + 64 = 80
  3. 3(x − 7)² + (y + 2)² = 80

Answer(x − 7)² + (y + 2)² = 80
