The question, in short
Explain why rounding 4896 to 4900 cannot be confirmed as nearest 100, then evaluate (6.4 × 4²)/(17.9 − 6.1) to 3 decimal places.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Give a reason why 4900 does not prove 4896 was rounded to the nearest 100.
- 14896 to the nearest 10 is also 4900
- 2So Tanvi may have rounded to the nearest 10, not the nearest 100
AnswerA correct alternative rounding e.g. Tanvi rounded to nearest 10
Part (b) · 2 marks
Work out (6.4 × 4²) divided by (17.9 − 6.1), giving the result to 3 decimal places.
- 1Top: 6.4 × 16 = 102.4
- 2Bottom: 17.9 − 6.1 = 11.8
- 3102.4 ÷ 11.8 = 8.6779…
- 4= 8.678 (3 d.p.)
Answer8.678
