The question, in short
Using a table of ages and masses for 10 babies, complete a scatter diagram, describe its correlation, add a line of best fit, and estimate the mass at 14 weeks.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Plot the remaining four points from the table on the scatter diagram, where the first six are already shown.
- 1Use the last four columns of the table.
- 2Age goes across, mass goes up.
- 3Plot (9, 4.6), (7, 4.5), (1, 2.5) and (11, 5.3)
Answer4 points correctly plotted: (9, 4.6), (7, 4.5), (1, 2.5), (11, 5.3)
Part (b) · 1 mark
State the type of correlation displayed by the scatter diagram.
- 1Mass increases as age increases: positive correlation
AnswerPositive
Part (c) · 1 mark
Draw a line of best fit on the scatter diagram.
- 1Rule a straight line through the middle of the points, following the upward trend, e.g. from about (1, 2.8) to (15, 6.3)
AnswerRuled line of best fit
Part (d) · 1 mark
Use your line of best fit to estimate the mass of a baby aged 14 weeks.
- 1Go up from 14 weeks to your line and across to the mass axis
- 2e.g. about 6 kg
AnswerReading at 14 weeks from their ruled line of best fit with positive gradient
