The question, in short

Given points A (5, 7) and B (9, −1), find the length AB and the equation of the line through A and B.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 3 marks

Calculate the distance between A (5, 7) and B (9, −1).

  1. 1AB² = (9 − 5)² + (−1 − 7)²
  2. 2= 16 + 64 = 80
  3. 3AB = √80 = 8.944… ≈ 8.94

Answer8.94 or 8.944…

Part (b) · 3 marks

Find the equation of the straight line passing through A (5, 7) and B (9, −1).

  1. 1Gradient = (−1 − 7)/(9 − 5) = −8/4 = −2
  2. 27 = −2 × 5 + c, so c = 17
  3. 3y = −2x + 17

Answery = −2x + 17
