Part (ai) · 2 marks
Find the number of apple trees from 1250 trees split in the ratio 12:9:4.
- 112 + 9 + 4 = 25 parts
- 21 part = 1250 ÷ 25 = 50 trees
- 3Apple trees = 12 × 50 = 600
Answer600
Part (aii) · 2 marks
Using mean 64 kg per tree, find total fruit mass in tonnes (1 tonne = 1000 kg).
- 1Total mass = 1250 × 64 = 80 000 kg
- 280 000 ÷ 1000 = 80 tonnes
Answer80
Part (aiii) · 2 marks
Mean pear mass 54 kg per tree is a 10% decrease; find the previous year's mean mass per tree.
- 1Last year = 90% of the year before: x × (1 − 10/100) = 54
- 20.9x = 54
- 3x = 54 ÷ 0.9 = 60 kg
Answer60
Part (aiv) · 2 marks
After losing 1/5 of all trees in a storm, find how many trees remain.
- 1Trees lost = 1250 ÷ 5 = 250
- 2Trees remaining = 1250 − 250 = 1000
Answer1000
Part (bi) · 2 marks
Paulo buys 12 pears at $0.54 each and pays with $10; find his change.
- 1Cost = 12 × 0.54 = $6.48
- 2Change = 10 − 6.48 = $3.52
