The question, in short

Convert Sara's cycling speed of 420 metres per minute into kilometres per hour, and find Jan's average cycling speed in km/h over 51 km, accounting for a 25 minute rest between 11 55 and 14 41.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Change 420 metres per minute into kilometres per hour.

  1. 1420 m/min = 420 ÷ 1000 = 0.42 km/min
  2. 20.42 × 60 = 25.2 km/h

Answer25.2

Part (b) · 4 marks

For a 51 km ride from 11 55 to 14 41 with a 25 minute rest, work out the average speed in km/h while cycling.

  1. 111 55 to 14 41 = 2 h 46 min = 166 min
  2. 2Cycling time = 166 − 25 = 141 min = 2.35 h
  3. 3Speed = 51 ÷ 2.35 = 21.70… ≈ 21.7 km/h

Answer21.7 or 21.70…
