The question, in short

Use the floor plan ABCDE with given side lengths to find EF and AF, then calculate floor area, cupboard volume, tile cost and semicircular patio area.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (ai) · 1 mark

Show that EF equals 1.9 m using the given dimensions and right angles in the diagram.

  1. 1EF = CD − BA
  2. 2= 5.5 − 3.6 = 1.9 m

Answer5.5 − 3.6 = 1.9

Part (aii) · 1 mark

Work out the length AF from the floor plan dimensions.

  1. 1AF = BC − DE = 4.7 − 1.7 = 3 m

Answer3

Part (b) · 3 marks

Calculate the total area of the floor ABCDE.

  1. 1Rectangle 4.7 × 3.6 = 16.92
  2. 2Rectangle 1.9 × 1.7 = 3.23
  3. 3Triangle 1/2 × 1.9 × 3 = 2.85
  4. 4Area = 16.92 + 3.23 + 2.85 = 23 m²

Answer23

Part (c) · 2 marks

Find the volume of a cuboid cupboard with base area 1.2 m² and height 2.3 m, giving units.

  1. 1Volume = 1.2 × 2.3
  2. 2= 2.76 m³

Answer2.76 m³

Part (d) · 1 mark

Calculate the total cost of 275 floor tiles at $1.64 each.

  1. 1275 × 1.64 = $451

Answer451

Part (e) · 2 marks

Calculate the area of a semicircular patio with radius 2.3 m.

  1. 1Area = 1/2 × π × 2.3²
  2. 2= 8.309… ≈ 8.31 m²

Answer8.31 or 8.309 to 8.311
