The question, in short
A curve has equation y = ax¹¹ + 3xᵇ and derivative 44x¹⁰ + 18xᶜ. Work out the numbers a, b and c.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 2 marks
- 1dy/dx = 11ax¹⁰ + 3bx^(b − 1)
- 211a = 44, so a = 4
- 33b = 18, so b = 6, and c = b − 1 = 5
- 4a = 4, b = 6, c = 5
Answera = 4, b = 6, c = 5
