The question, in short

Simplify a linear expression in x and y, then expand a pair of brackets and simplify the resulting quadratic expression.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Collect like terms in 3x − 2y + 5x + 7y to give a simplified expression.

  1. 13x + 5x = 8x
  2. 2−2y + 7y = 5y
  3. 38x + 5y

Answer8x + 5y

Part (b) · 2 marks

Expand (3x + 5)(x − 7) and simplify the resulting expression.

  1. 13x × x = 3x², 3x × (−7) = −21x
  2. 25 × x = 5x, 5 × (−7) = −35
  3. 33x² − 21x + 5x − 35 = 3x² − 16x − 35

Answer3x² − 16x − 35
