The question, in short

A 4 by 12 grid has some squares shaded; find the shaded fraction in lowest terms, then add shading so that one sixth stays unshaded.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

From the grid, state the proportion of squares shaded, reduced to its lowest terms.

  1. 1Total squares = 12 × 4 = 48
  2. 2Shaded = 6 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 22
  3. 322/48 = 11/24

Answer11/24

Part (b) · 1 mark

Add shading to the grid until exactly 1/6 of the rectangle remains unshaded.

  1. 11/6 of 48 = 8 squares not shaded
  2. 248 − 8 = 40 shaded
  3. 3Shade 40 − 22 = 18 more squares

Answer18 more squares shaded, leaving 8 squares not shaded
