The question, in short

Find the equation of the line through A (3, 16) and B (8, 31) in y = mx + c form, and the gradient of a line perpendicular to y = 0.5x − 11.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 3 marks

Find the equation of the line through (3, 16) and (8, 31), giving it as y = mx + c.

  1. 1Gradient = (31 − 16)/(8 − 3) = 15/5 = 3
  2. 216 = 3 × 3 + c, so c = 7
  3. 3y = 3x + 7

Answery = 3x + 7

Part (b) · 1 mark

Find the gradient of a line perpendicular to the line with equation y = 0.5x − 11.

  1. 1Gradient of CD = 0.5
  2. 2Perpendicular gradient = −1 ÷ 0.5 = −2
