Part (a) · 4 marks

Find the time to run 6 km at the same pace as 400 m in 79 seconds, giving minutes and seconds.

  1. 16 km = 6000 m, laps = 6000 ÷ 400 = 15
  2. 2Time = 15 × 79 = 1185 s
  3. 31185 ÷ 60 = 19 remainder 45
  4. 419 minutes 45 seconds

Answer19 minutes 45 seconds

Part (b) · 1 mark

Given the probability of not winning is 0.94, find the probability that she wins.

  1. 1P(wins) = 1 − 0.94 = 0.06

Answer0.06

Part (ci) · 1 mark

From the seven daily lap counts, write down the mode.

  1. 115 appears twice, so mode = 15

Answer15

Part (cii) · 2 marks

From the seven daily lap counts, find the median.

  1. 1In order: 15, 15, 16, 24, 28, 32, 42
  2. 2Median = 4th value = 24

Answer24

Part (ciii) · 1 mark

From the seven daily lap counts, find the range.

  1. 1Range = 42 − 15 = 27

Answer27

Part (d) · 3 marks

Five lap times are given; after a 6th lap the mean is 67 seconds. Find the 6th lap time.

  1. 1Total for 6 laps = 6 × 67 = 402
  2. 2Total for 5 laps = 59 + 74 + 69 + 63 + 65 = 330
  3. 36th lap = 402 − 330 = 72 s
