The question, in short
Work through five algebra tasks: evaluate a formula, solve an equation, expand and simplify, rearrange for c, and factorise fully.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Using s = 1/2 at², work out s given a = 9.8 and t = 20.
- 1s = 1/2 × 9.8 × 20²
- 2= 1/2 × 9.8 × 400 = 1960
Answer1960
Part (b) · 3 marks
Find the value of y that satisfies 5(4y − 3) = 15.
- 120y − 15 = 15
- 220y = 30
- 3y = 1.5
Answer1.5 or 1 1/2 or 3/2
Part (c) · 2 marks
Multiply out and collect terms in 3(5x − 8) − 2(3x − 7).
- 115x − 24 − 6x + 14
- 2= 9x − 10
Answer9x − 10
Part (d) · 3 marks
Rewrite A = 2b² − 3c³ so that c is expressed in terms of A and b.
- 13c³ = 2b² − A
- 2c³ = (2b² − A)/3
- 3c = ∛((2b² − A)/3)
Answer∛((2b² − A)/3)
Part (e) · 2 marks
Write 6pq − 4q − 3p + 2 as a product of factors with nothing further removable.
- 12q(3p − 2) − 1(3p − 2)
- 2= (2q − 1)(3p − 2)
Answer(2q − 1)(3p − 2) or (1 − 2q)(2 − 3p)
