The question, in short
Three-part speed problem: convert a 100 m run in 15 seconds to km/h, combine two runs into an overall average speed, and derive a time in seconds for a train of length p through a station of length q at v km/h.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Work out the average speed in kilometres per hour for a 100 m run completed in 15 seconds.
- 1Speed = 100 ÷ 15 = 6.66... m/s
- 26.66... × 3600 ÷ 1000 = 24 km/h
Answer24
Part (b) · 3 marks
Find the overall average speed for a 45 minute run at 9.5 km/h followed by 8.1 km at 7.5 km/h.
- 1First distance = 9.5 × 45/60 = 7.125 km
- 2Second time = 8.1 ÷ 7.5 = 1.08 h
- 3Total distance = 7.125 + 8.1 = 15.225 km, total time = 0.75 + 1.08 = 1.83 h
- 4Average speed = 15.225 ÷ 1.83 = 8.32 km/h
Answer8.32 or 8.319 to 8.320
Part (c) · 3 marks
Give an expression in seconds, using p, q and v, for how long the train takes to clear the station completely.
- 1Distance to travel = (p + q) m
- 2Speed = v × 1000/3600 = 5v/18 m/s
- 3Time = (p + q) ÷ (5v/18)
- 4= 18(p + q)/(5v) seconds
Answer18(p + q)/(5v)
