The question, in short

A 10 m by 16 m rectangular garden contains a circular pond whose diameter equals the rectangle's 10 m width; find the pond area, the grass area, and the grass percentage.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Calculate the area of the circular pond using its diameter of 10 m.

  1. 1Radius = 10 ÷ 2 = 5 m
  2. 2Area = π × 5² = 78.53… ≈ 78.5 m²

Answer78.5 or 78.6 or 78.53 to 78.55

Part (b) · 2 marks

Find the shaded grass area by subtracting the pond area from the 10 m by 16 m rectangle.

  1. 1Half of the pond lies inside the rectangle
  2. 2Grass = 10 × 16 − 1/2 × 78.53… = 120.73… ≈ 121 m²

Answer121 or 120.7 to 120.8

Part (c) · 2 marks

Work out what percentage of the whole garden area is grass.

  1. 1Garden = 10 × 16 + 1/2 × 78.53… = 199.26… m²
  2. 2Percentage = 120.73… ÷ 199.26… × 100 = 60.6%

Answer60.4 to 60.8
