The question, in short

Simplify an algebraic expression by collecting like terms, then rearrange a formula to find t given q = 37 and r = 4.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Simplify 5b − 8c + 2b − 3c by combining the b terms and the c terms.

  1. 15b + 2b = 7b
  2. 2−8c − 3c = −11c
  3. 3= 7b − 11c

Answer7b − 11c

Part (b) · 2 marks

Using q = 3r + 5t, find t when q = 37 and r = 4.

  1. 137 = 3 × 4 + 5t
  2. 237 = 12 + 5t, so 5t = 25
  3. 3t = 5
