The question, in short
Use two diagrams of triangles to find unknown lengths: similar triangles A and B give x, and a right-angled triangle with hypotenuse 5.4 cm and angle 38° gives y.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Triangles A and B are similar, with sides 20.8 cm and 9.1 cm matching x cm and 1.4 cm. Find x.
- 1x/1.4 = 20.8/9.1
- 2x = 20.8 × 1.4 ÷ 9.1 = 3.2
Answer3.2
Part (b) · 2 marks
A right-angled triangle has hypotenuse 5.4 cm and an angle of 38°. Find the base length y.
- 1cos 38° = y/5.4
- 2y = 5.4 × cos 38° = 4.255… ≈ 4.26
Answer4.26 or 4.255…
