The question, in short

Solve cot(y + 1.5) = 3 for y in radians, giving all solutions in the interval 0 < y < 6.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1tan(y + 1.5) = 1/3
  2. 21.5 < y + 1.5 < 7.5
  3. 3Principal value 0.3218 gives y = −1.178, out of range
  4. 4y + 1.5 = 0.3218 + π = 3.4633, so y = 1.96
  5. 5y + 1.5 = 0.3218 + 2π = 6.6049, so y = 5.10

Answery = 1.96, y = 5.10
