Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 8 marks
- 1Subtract the equations: 14x + 2y − 40 = 0, so y = 20 − 7x
- 2Substitute: x² + 2x + (20 − 7x)² − 4(20 − 7x) − 20 = 0
- 350x² − 250x + 300 = 0, so x² − 5x + 6 = 0
- 4(x − 2)(x − 3) = 0, x = 2 or x = 3
- 5x = 3: y = −1; x = 2: y = 6
Answer(3, −1) and (2, 6)
