The question, in short

Find the x-coordinates where the curve y = (2x − 9)(x² + 5) + 42 crosses the x-axis, without using accurate drawing.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 6 marks

  1. 12x³ − 9x² + 10x − 45 + 42 = 0, so 2x³ − 9x² + 10x − 3 = 0
  2. 2x = 1: 2 − 9 + 10 − 3 = 0, so (x − 1) is a factor
  3. 32x³ − 9x² + 10x − 3 = (x − 1)(2x² − 7x + 3)
  4. 42x² − 7x + 3 = (2x − 1)(x − 3)
  5. 5x = 1/2, 1, 3

Answerx = 1/2, 1, 3
