The question, in short

Given an arithmetic progression with nonzero first term a and nonzero common difference d, use the two stated conditions about the 6th and 11th terms and the first six terms to determine a and d.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1a + 5d + a + 10d = 0, so 2a + 15d = 0
  2. 2(6/2)(2a + 5d) = −30, so 2a + 5d = −10
  3. 3Subtract: 10d = 10, d = 1
  4. 42a = −15, a = −15/2

Answerd = 1, a = −15/2
