Part (a) · 3 marks
Find dy/dx for y = √(x + 1) + cos(5x + 3).
- 1√(x + 1) = (x + 1)^(1/2), derivative (1/2)(x + 1)^(−1/2)
- 2d/dx cos(5x + 3) = −5 sin(5x + 3)
- 3dy/dx = (1/2)(x + 1)^(−1/2) − 5 sin(5x + 3)
Answerdy/dx = (1/2)(x + 1)^(−1/2) − 5 sin(5x + 3)
Part (b) · 3 marks
Work out the indefinite integral of sec²(x/3) with respect to x.
- 1d/dx tan(x/3) = (1/3) sec²(x/3)
- 2So ∫ sec²(x/3) dx = 3 tan(x/3) + c
Answer3 tan(x/3) + c
