The question, in short

Find the area between y = 2 + 5eˣ and y = 4 − 3e^(2x) from their intersection to the y-axis, giving the result as a + b ln 3.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 10 marks

  1. 12 + 5eˣ = 4 − 3e^(2x) gives 3e^(2x) + 5eˣ − 2 = 0
  2. 2(3eˣ − 1)(eˣ + 2) = 0, so eˣ = 1/3 (eˣ = −2 impossible)
  3. 3x = ln(1/3) = −ln 3
  4. 4Area = ∫ from −ln 3 to 0 of (3e^(2x) + 5eˣ − 2) dx
  5. 5= [(3/2)e^(2x) + 5eˣ − 2x] from −ln 3 to 0
  6. 6= (3/2 + 5) − (3/2 × 1/9 + 5/3 + 2 ln 3)
  7. 7= 14/3 − 2 ln 3

Answer14/3 − 2 ln 3
