The question, in short

Work with two locations, Lenton and Mingfield: reverse a given bearing, then derive a map scale ratio from a measured map length and a real distance.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Given the bearing of Mingfield seen from Lenton is 156°, work out the bearing of Lenton as viewed from Mingfield.

  1. 1Back bearing = 156 + 180
  2. 2= 336°

Answer336

Part (b) · 2 marks

A map gap of 4.5 cm stands for a real 9 km; express the map scale as 1 : n.

  1. 19 km = 9 × 1000 × 100 = 900 000 cm
  2. 24.5 : 900 000
  3. 3= 1 : 200 000

Answer1 : 200 000
