The question, in short
Given the graph of y = aˣ + b passing through P (0, 5) and Q (2, 13), find the constants a and b, then state the asymptote's equation.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 3 marks
Use the coordinates of P (0, 5) and Q (2, 13) to find the values of a and b.
- 1At P: 5 = a⁰ + b = 1 + b, so b = 4
- 2At Q: 13 = a² + 4
- 3a² = 9, a = 3 (a > 0)
Answera = 3, b = 4
Part (b) · 1 mark
State the equation of the horizontal asymptote of the graph.
- 1As x → −∞, aˣ → 0
- 2So y → b = 4; asymptote y = 4
Answery = 4
