The question, in short

There are 60 cards, each red or green and each a square or a triangle. Red : green = 2 : 1, square : triangle = 5 : 1, and 16 cards are green squares. Show there are 20 green cards, then fill in a two-way table (rows square/triangle/total, columns red/green/total).

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Show that 20 cards are green.

  1. 12 + 1 = 3 parts
  2. 260 ÷ 3 = 20 per part
  3. 3Green = 1 part = 20

Answer60 ÷ (2 + 1) = 20, or 2/3 × 60 = 40 and 60 − 40 = 20

Part (b) · 2 marks

Complete the two-way table.

  1. 1Squares = 60 ÷ 6 × 5 = 50, triangles = 10
  2. 2Red total = 60 − 20 = 40
  3. 3Red squares = 50 − 16 = 34
  4. 4Green triangles = 20 − 16 = 4, red triangles = 10 − 4 = 6

Answerred: square 34, triangle 6, total 40; green: square 16, triangle 4; total: square 50, triangle 10
