The question, in short
Given f(x) = 1 + 3x/2 and g(x) = 2/(1 − x), find the inverse of f and solve an equation involving g and f.

Part (a) · 3 marks
Find f⁻¹(x), the inverse function of f.
- 1y = 1 + 3x/2
- 2Swap x and y: x = 1 + 3y/2
- 33y/2 = x − 1, so 3y = 2(x − 1)
- 4f⁻¹(x) = (2(x − 1))/3
Answer(2(x−1))/3 or (2x−2)/3
Part (b) · 3 marks
Solve g(x) = f(−4) for x.
- 1f(−4) = 1 + (3 × −4)/2 = 1 − 6 = −5
- 22/(1 − x) = −5
- 32 = −5(1 − x) = −5 + 5x
- 45x = 7, so x = 7/5
