The question, in short

Simplify the expression (25x² − 64)/(5x² − 13x − 6) × (x² − 8x + 15)/(5x + 8) − (x − 7) into one fraction in simplest form, showing algebraic working.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Factorise: (5x − 8)(5x + 8), (5x + 2)(x − 3) and (x − 5)(x − 3)
  2. 2Cancel (5x + 8) and (x − 3): (5x − 8)(x − 5)/(5x + 2) − (x − 7)
  3. 3Common denominator: [(5x − 8)(x − 5) − (x − 7)(5x + 2)]/(5x + 2)
  4. 4Numerator: (5x² − 33x + 40) − (5x² − 33x − 14) = 54
  5. 554/(5x + 2)

Answer54 / (5x + 2)
