The question, in short

Solve 5/(x + 2) + 3/(x² + 2x) = 2, showing clear algebraic working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1x² + 2x = x(x + 2), so the common denominator is x(x + 2)
  2. 2Combine: (5x + 3)/(x(x + 2)) = 2, so 5x + 3 = 2x² + 4x
  3. 3Rearrange: 2x² − x − 3 = 0, so (2x − 3)(x + 1) = 0
  4. 4x = 1.5 and −1

Answer1.5 and −1
