The question, in short

Evaluate three numerical expressions: a squared sum, an exponent n from 64 = 4ⁿ, and a calculator value of a square root fraction.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Work out the value of (4 + 3 + 6)².

  1. 14 + 3 + 6 = 13
  2. 213² = 169

Answer169

Part (b) · 1 mark

Given 64 = 4ⁿ, write down the value of n.

  1. 14³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64
  2. 2So n = 3

Answer3

Part (c) · 2 marks

Work out √(9.3 + 2.8³)/(3.2 × 1.2) and write all calculator display figures.

  1. 1Top: 2.8³ = 21.952
  2. 29.3 + 21.952 = 31.252, and √31.252 = 5.590349
  3. 3Bottom: 3.2 × 1.2 = 3.84
  4. 45.590349 ÷ 3.84 = 1.455820007

Answer1.455820007
