Part (a) · 2 marks
Find the total cost of sending a 1.3 kg parcel and an 8 kg parcel using the table.
- 11.3 kg falls in the 1 < w ≤ 2 range, so cost is £9.02
- 28 kg falls in the 5 < w ≤ 10 range, so cost is £21.90
- 39.02 + 21.90 = 30.92
Answer30.92
Part (b) · 3 marks
Given three parcels cost £33.89 total, with weights 1.5 kg and 2.8 kg, find the greatest possible weight of the third.
- 11.5 kg falls in the 1 < w ≤ 2 range, so cost is £9.02
- 22.8 kg falls in the 2 < w ≤ 5 range, so cost is £15.85
- 39.02 + 15.85 = 24.87
- 433.89 − 24.87 = 9.02
- 5The cost of the third parcel is £9.02
- 6£9.02 corresponds to the weight range 1 < w ≤ 2
