Solution · 4 marks
- 1Let y = 3x² − 12x + 7
- 2Complete the square: y = 3(x² − 4x) + 7
- 3y = 3((x − 2)² − 4) + 7
- 4y = 3(x − 2)² − 12 + 7
- 5y = 3(x − 2)² − 5
- 6Swap x and y: x = 3(y − 2)² − 5
- 7Solve for y: x + 5 = 3(y − 2)²
- 8(x + 5)/3 = (y − 2)²
- 9y − 2 = ±√((x + 5)/3)
- 10Since x ≤ 2, y − 2 ≤ 0, so take negative root: y − 2 = −√((x + 5)/3)
- 11y = 2 − √((x + 5)/3)
- 12f⁻¹(x) = 2 − √((x + 5)/3)
Answer2 − √((x + 5)/3)
