Part (a) · 1 mark
Identify which of the six listed countries has the shortest bar, meaning the smallest total medal count.
- 1Reading the heights of the bars: Germany 42, Great Britain 67, Italy 28, Kenya 13, Russia 56, South Korea 21.
- 2The shortest bar is Kenya's, at 13 medals.
- 3Kenya won the fewest total number of medals.
AnswerKenya
Part (b) · 2 marks
Given Great Britain's 27 gold medals, calculate how many of its medals from the chart were not gold.
- 1The bar for Great Britain reaches 67, so Great Britain won 67 medals in total.
- 2Medals that were not gold = 67 − 27
- 367 − 27 = 40
Answer40
Part (c) · 2 marks
Read Russia's and Germany's totals from the chart and express their ratio in simplest form.
- 1Russia's bar reaches 56 and Germany's bar reaches 42.
- 2Russia : Germany = 56 : 42
- 3The highest common factor of 56 and 42 is 14.
- 456 ÷ 14 = 4 and 42 ÷ 14 = 3
- 5Russia : Germany = 4 : 3
Answer4 : 3
Part (d) · 2 marks
Using the USA's 46 gold, 37 silver and 38 bronze medals, find the fraction of its total that were gold.
- 1Total medals won by the USA = 46 + 37 + 38
- 246 + 37 + 38 = 121
- 346 of these 121 medals were gold.
- 4The fraction of the USA's medals that were gold is 46/121
Answer46/121
