The question, in short

Solve two linear equations: 8 − 2p = 15, and (7x − 2) ÷ 4 = 3x + 1, showing clear algebraic working for the second.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Solve 8 − 2p = 15 to find the value of p.

  1. 1Subtract 8: −2p = 15 − 8 = 7
  2. 2Divide by −2: p = 7 ÷ (−2)
  3. 3p = −3.5

Answer−3.5

Part (b) · 3 marks

Solve (7x − 2) ÷ 4 = 3x + 1 for x, showing clear algebraic working.

  1. 1Multiply both sides by 4: 7x − 2 = 12x + 4
  2. 27x − 12x = 4 + 2
  3. 3−5x = 6
  4. 4x = −6/5

Answer−6/5
