The question, in short
Algebra question: expand and simplify two expressions, factorise fully, and solve an equation showing algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Expand and simplify 3(c − 7) + 2(3c + 4).
- 13(c − 7) = 3c − 21
- 22(3c + 4) = 6c + 8
- 33c − 21 + 6c + 8 = 9c − 13
Answer9c − 13
Part (b) · 2 marks
Expand and simplify (x + 7)(x − 2).
- 1(x + 7)(x − 2) = x² − 2x + 7x − 14
- 2x² + 5x − 14
Answerx² + 5x − 14
Part (c) · 2 marks
Factorise fully 28y² − 21y.
- 1Factor out the highest common factor, 7y
- 228y² − 21y = 7y(4y − 3)
Answer7y(4y − 3)
Part (d) · 3 marks
Solve (7x − 2) ÷ 4 = 3x + 1, showing clear algebraic working.
- 1Multiply both sides by 4: 7x − 2 = 4(3x + 1)
- 27x − 2 = 12x + 4
- 37x − 12x = 4 + 2
- 4−5x = 6
- 5x = −6/5
Answer−6/5
