A class of 30 students has mean mark 26.8; 13 boys have mean 25. Find the girls' mean mark, to 3 significant figures.

- 1Total for all 30 = 30 × 26.8 = 804
- 2Total for 13 boys = 13 × 25 = 325
- 3Girls: 30 − 13 = 17, total = 804 − 325 = 479
- 4Mean = 479 ÷ 17 = 28.176…
- 5= 28.2 (3 s.f.)
