The question, in short

Solve the simultaneous equations x + 2y = −0.5 and 3x − y = 16, showing clear algebraic working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Multiply the second equation by 2: 6x − 2y = 32
  2. 2Add to x + 2y = −0.5: 7x = 31.5
  3. 3x = 4.5
  4. 43 × 4.5 − y = 16, so y = 13.5 − 16 = −2.5

Answerx = 4.5, y = −2.5
