The question, in short

Solve 3x + 5y = 8 and 4x + y = −3.5 using algebra.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Multiply 4x + y = −3.5 by 5: 20x + 5y = −17.5
  2. 2Subtract 3x + 5y = 8: 17x = −25.5
  3. 3x = −1.5
  4. 44 × (−1.5) + y = −3.5
  5. 5y = 2.5

Answerx = −1.5, y = 2.5
