Part (a) · 2 marks

Reduce 24/40 to its lowest terms.

  1. 124 ÷ 8 = 3
  2. 240 ÷ 8 = 5
  3. 33/5

Answer3/5

Part (b) · 1 mark

Convert 1/5 into decimal form.

  1. 11 ÷ 5 = 0.2

Answer0.2

Part (c) · 1 mark

Blue to white bricks are in ratio 3:7; find the fraction of all bricks that are blue.

  1. 13 + 7 = 10
  2. 23/10

Answer3/10

Part (d) · 2 marks

Show that adding 3/8 and 1/24 gives 5/12.

  1. 1Use the common denominator 24: 3/8 = 9/24
  2. 29/24 + 1/24 = 10/24
  3. 3Divide top and bottom by 2: 10/24 = 5/12

Answer3/8 = 9/24, so 3/8 + 1/24 = 9/24 + 1/24 = 10/24 = 5/12

Part (e) · 3 marks

From 280 counters, half red and two fifths yellow, find how many are green.

  1. 1Red: 1/2 × 280 = 140
  2. 2Yellow: 2/5 × 280 = 112
  3. 3Red and yellow: 140 + 112 = 252
  4. 4Green: 280 − 252 = 28
