The question, in short
Solve the simultaneous equations 7x − 2y = 34 and 3x + 5y = −3, showing clear algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1Multiply the first equation by 5: 35x − 10y = 170
- 2Multiply the second equation by 2: 6x + 10y = −6
- 3Add: 41x = 164, so x = 4
- 43 × 4 + 5y = −3, so 5y = −15
- 5x = 4, y = −3
Answerx = 4, y = −3
