The question, in short

Simplify a power of a term, rewrite a negative-index fraction in the form ayⁿ with integer a and n, and solve a fractional linear equation showing working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Simplify fully (8e¹⁵)^(2/3).

  1. 1Power 2/3: cube root, then square
  2. 2∛(8e¹⁵) = 2e⁵
  3. 3(2e⁵)² = 4e¹⁰

Answer4e¹⁰

Part (b) · 2 marks

Express (y/2)⁻⁴ as ayⁿ where a and n are integers.

  1. 1A negative power flips the fraction: (y/2)⁻⁴ = (2/y)⁴
  2. 2(2/y)⁴ = 16/y⁴
  3. 316/y⁴ = 16y⁻⁴

Answer16y⁻⁴

Part (c) · 4 marks

Solve (4x − 2)/3 − (5 − 3x)/4 = 6, showing clear algebraic working.

  1. 1Multiply every term by 12: 4(4x − 2) − 3(5 − 3x) = 72
  2. 216x − 8 − 15 + 9x = 72
  3. 325x − 23 = 72, so 25x = 95
  4. 4x = 95 ÷ 25 = 3.8

Answer3.8
