Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (i) · 2 marks

Factorise x² + 2x − 24 into two brackets.

  1. 1Find two numbers that multiply to −24 and add to 2
  2. 2These numbers are 6 and −4
  3. 3(x + 6)(x − 4)

Answer(x + 6)(x − 4)

Part (ii) · 1 mark

Using your factorisation, find the values of x that satisfy x² + 2x − 24 = 0.

  1. 1Set each factor equal to zero: x + 6 = 0 and x − 4 = 0
  2. 2Solve: x = −6 and x = 4
  3. 3−6, 4

Answer−6, 4
