The question, in short
Complete five short algebra tasks: expand a product, rearrange a formula, simplify two index expressions, factorise a quadratic and solve it.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Expand the bracket x(x − 3).
- 1x × x = x²
- 2x × (−3) = −3x
- 3= x² − 3x
Answerx² − 3x
Part (b) · 2 marks
Rearrange m = (t + 4)/5 to make t the subject.
- 1m = (t + 4)/5
- 25m = t + 4
- 3t = 5m − 4
Answert = 5m − 4
Part (c) · 1 mark
Simplify a⁶ × a¹⁰ using index laws.
- 1Add the powers: 6 + 10 = 16
- 2= a¹⁶
Answera¹⁶
Part (d) · 1 mark
Simplify c³⁰ ÷ c¹² using index laws.
- 1Subtract the powers: 30 − 12 = 18
- 2= c¹⁸
Answerc¹⁸
Part (ei) · 2 marks
Factorise the quadratic y² − 10y + 21.
- 1Need two numbers that multiply to 21 and add to −10
- 2−3 and −7
- 3= (y − 3)(y − 7)
Answer(y − 3)(y − 7)
Part (eii) · 1 mark
Using your factorisation, solve y² − 10y + 21 = 0.
- 1(y − 3)(y − 7) = 0
- 2y − 3 = 0 or y − 7 = 0
- 3y = 3 or y = 7
Answer3, 7
