The question, in short
Solve the simultaneous equations 5a + 2c = 10 and 2a − 4c = 7, showing clear algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1Multiply the first equation by 2: 10a + 4c = 20
- 2Add 2a − 4c = 7 to remove c: 12a = 27, so a = 2.25
- 3Substitute into 5a + 2c = 10: 11.25 + 2c = 10
- 42c = −1.25, so a = 2.25, c = −0.625
Answera = 2.25, c = −0.625
