The question, in short
From the opening terms 1, 5, 9, 13, 17 of an arithmetic sequence, derive a formula for the nth term, then use the rule 3n + 5 for a second sequence.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Work out a formula involving n that produces the nth term of the sequence starting 1, 5, 9, 13, 17.
- 1Common difference = 5 − 1 = 4
- 2First term = 1
- 3nth term = 4n + (1 − 4)
- 44n − 3
Answer4n − 3
Part (b) · 1 mark
Given the nth term 3n + 5, write the term at position 2m as an expression in m.
- 1Given nth term = 3n + 5
- 2Replace n with 2m
- 33(2m) + 5
- 46m + 5
Answer6m + 5
