The question, in short

Solve an equation with two algebraic fractions equal to 13, then solve a quadratic inequality, showing working for both.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 4 marks

Solve (4x + 5)/3 − (3 − 2x)/2 = 13, showing clear algebraic working.

  1. 1(2(4x + 5) − 3(3 − 2x)) / 6 = 13
  2. 22(4x + 5) − 3(3 − 2x) = 78
  3. 38x + 10 − 9 + 6x = 78
  4. 414x + 1 = 78
  5. 514x = 77
  6. 6x = 5.5

Answer5.5

Part (b) · 3 marks

Solve the inequality 2y² − 7y − 30 ≤ 0, showing working clearly.

  1. 1Solve 2y² − 7y − 30 = 0 to find the critical values
  2. 2Factorise: (2y + 5)(y − 6) = 0, so y = −2.5 or y = 6
  3. 3The curve is below zero between the roots
  4. 4−2.5 ≤ y ≤ 6

Answer−2.5 ≤ y ≤ 6
